Challenge #30 - Magical Realism


Hi folks

We have arrived at the final challenge for November 2021.

For those of you who wrote every single day this month, well done!

For those of you who wrote some but maybe not every day, also well done!

You all have more writing in hand than you did at the end of October, and that was the whole point.

Hopefully all of you have at least one or two ideas you want to continue pursuing in the year ahead.

This all went much better than we were expecting here on our end.  Honestly, I was expecting maybe half a dozen folks, all local and we ended up with dozens and dozens of you, so thanks for finding us, and thanks for prioritizing your writing a little bit every day.  It’s dicey making pronouncements about anything a year out, but the plan is to definitely do this again next November.  So if you found it useful, mark your calendars.

Once everyone’s turned in what they’re going to write for this last challenge day, I’ll tally everything up and follow up with an email of everyone that looks like they did all 30 days, just to confirm with everyone and make sure I didn’t accidentally miss anybody.

Then we’ll confirm your addresses where to send the check (we’re new, so we don’t have a credit card or Venmo/CashApp account or anything like that yet - so it’s old school handwritten checks).  You can all say you were paid by a theater company for your writing and it will be true, you can even show them evidence :)

It was a bit of a marathon for me on this end, too, but it was worth it to see you all cranking out those pages of dialogue and sketches of ideas.  Even your little escape hatch plays some days were quite inventive and entertaining.

Challenge #30 - Magical Realism

Due: Wednesday, December 1st, 8am

One of the best accidental by-products of a stage management assignment in grad school is that, for a director’s thesis project, she wanted to adapt a short story by the author Gabriel García Márquez for the stage.  Because of this, she urged all of us to read his novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” (not a small ask, but one of the things I miss most about school is being “required” to read things).  The last few pages of that book still blow my mind - and made me a fan of magical realism - so when I saw it turn up later in the plays of people like Sarah Ruhl and Tony Kushner, it was like running into an old friend again.

The Chicago Theater company Something Marvelous encourages writers to embrace magical realism for the stage.  They even have a handy interactive flow chart that can let you know whether you play is more magical realism or actually something like horror or sci fi instead.

They also have a great overview article about the genre from Sean Douglas, which I’ll copy here:

“What is Magical Realism?

Magical realism (also known as magic realism or marvelous realism) is a genre in which fantastical or impossible events seamlessly occur within an otherwise realistic environment. These moments of the “marvelous” are accepted as part of the story’s reality, and can invite deeper consideration into life’s capacity for grand, unpredictable, or even irrational situations.

Magical realism as a distinct literary genre has its roots in mid-20th century Latin America. The region’s background in ancient folklore and the miracles of Catholic tradition, combined with ongoing political instability, cultivated a society uniquely rich in imagination and the sense that anything could be possible.

Alejo Carpentier, in the prologue to his 1949 novel The Kingdom of this World, writes of “lo real maravilloso,” which undergirds a general philosophy of life and openness to a deeper, poetic approach to reality. Put off by the formulas European art was using to depart from realism—the juxtaposition of disparate objects and qualities (such as Dalí’s melting watches) or overused medieval tales like the legends of King Arthur—he calls for a more authentic storytelling that is only possible among those who truly believe in a marvelous component to life.

This is not, of course, to say the events of such a story must be taken as scientifically accurate; but rather, it purports that magic can reveal genuine truth about the human experience that could not be fully captured in literal, rational descriptions.

The Nobel Prize-winning career of Gabriel García Márquez (1927­­–2014), whose 100 Years of Solitude remains a seminal work in the genre, has also been a major (if not the major) force in ushering magical realism into the popular lexicon. Born in Columbia and raised by his grandparents, Márquez’ upbringing offers an important look at the cultural forces that helped shape him and the genre as a whole.

"There was a real dichotomy in me,” he told NPR in 1984, “because, on one hand ... there was the world of my grandfather; a world of stark reality, of civil wars he told me about, since he had been a colonel in the last civil war. And then, on the other hand, there was the world of my grandmother, which was full of fantasy, completely outside of reality."

In a region of the world unbound by typical political and existential stasis, he learned to let nothing surprise him, and understood this ideology as a core part of his identity as a writer. While contemporaries like Faulkner were writing about marvelous events from an angle of surprise, Márquez wrote of them as much more natural occurrences.

“In Mexico,” he said to The Atlantic in 1973, “surrealism runs through the streets. Surrealism comes from the reality of Latin America.” Indeed, Márquez even preferred to think of himself as a “social realist” rather than a magical realist, so closely was his magic tied to everyday life.

But magical realism is not limited to Latin America, nor did it completely originate there. The earliest usage of the term, before it became more closely aligned with literature, comes from the art world of the 1920’s. In German art critic Franz Roh’s 1925 book After Expressionism: Magical Realism: Problems of the Newest European Painting, he identifies Magischer Realismus (“magic realism”) as a new Post-Expressionist form, defined by realistic, sharply rendered detail and an underlying sense of mystery or ambiguity.

And more recently, decades after it emerged as a literary genre, we see it represented in the work of authors such as Salman Rushdie, Sherman Alexie, Anne Carson, and Toni Morrison and playwrights such as Tarell Alvin McCraney, José Rivera, Sarah Ruhl, and Tony Kushner.

Perhaps it is fitting that magical realism, just as it shirks hard constraints on reality, cannot be pinned down to a strict set of formal rules, and may be as unpredictable as the world it represents. While a few important principles distinguish it from related genres like fantasy or science fiction—such as its political background and its commitment to real life over an alternate, escapist one—it may be expressed in any number of ways as artists explore their own personal understandings of the marvelous in their lives.

Here at Something Marvelous, the world’s only theatrical magical realism festival, it is not our goal to be the gatekeepers for magical realism, but ambassadors for it—celebrating established voices, nurturing new ones, and encouraging audiences to explore a unique genre that is not yet as common onstage as it is in literature.”

In a call for scripts from a few years back they asked for the following:

Selected new plays must

1. Take place in our expected human reality, and 


2. Introduce an extra-real or magical element that the characters accept as part of their world.

If you're unsure if your piece is a good fit, check out our info on magical realism, or try our interactive flowchart.

We give preference to plays that use magical realism to communicate a specific cultural experience; we seek diversity in points-of-view to represent a variety of perspectives based on gender, race, age, sexual orientation, subject matter, etc.

We encourage playwrights to let their imaginations soar and present creative challenges to our team of artists.

(Hauntings are a common convention, so we are seeking fresh ideas.)

This is all about getting things started, you can write more later. You have another 11 months (until the next November writing challenge) to build on whatever you come up with today, if you want. Just get anything on the page, even if won't make sense to anyone else, as long as it make sense to you.

The New York theater company Nylon Fusion regularly puts out a call for ten minute plays to a serial theme each year.

An example:

“We are seeking 10 minute plays to be a part of our series, This Round on Us: RETROSPECT: "The Best of Times, the Worst of Time, The Future"

RETROSPECT: The Best of Times
We have some success stories in history of the world. Explore one of them. Was it a success at the time or only in retrospect? Were they good for all or only some? Take any angle you want, even speculating what it would mean if things were different.

RETROSPECT: The Worst of Times
We have some epic fails in our past. Explore one of them. Was this a failure to all or just some? Could it have been prevented?   Should it have been prevented?  Take any angle you want, even speculating what it would mean if things were different.

PROSPECT: The Future
Every era has a “future” style. A future outlook based on the present. What does “future” look like now? What does it sound like? What does it feel like? We look at The Jetsons or Back To The Future and say “where is my flying car?” What do we expect now that we know that flying cars aren’t (yet?) a thing? Speculate. Have fun!”

So, which of the three do you want to take on?

Challenge #28 - Companion Plays

This prompt is the one you would be writing Sunday to be turned in on Monday morning, but just label your email for prompt 28 and you can turn it early and I’ll credit it ahead.

And of course, you can always use the mini-play at the bottom of the email and blog post as an escape hatch for the day’s writing.

Remember, if you get lost in this flurry of six prompts crammed into three days, just look at the date on your calendar - that’s the number of the prompt you should be writing that day, and turning in the next day by 8am, or, of course, as early as you want, to clear the decks for the holiday.

Challenge #28 - Companion Plays

Due: Monday, November 29th, 8am

(whenever 8am arrives in your time zone; we’ll do the math here in the Central Time zone, no worries :)

There’s a theater in Virginia dedicated to producing the work of Shakespeare that found an intriguing way to nurture the development of new plays that still relate to its mission.  Every six months (pre-pandemic, of course), they would put out a call for scripts “inspired by and in conversation with Shakespeare’s work” and they’d post a list of five random unrelated Shakespeare plays, a couple of the hits like “Romeo and Juliet” and “As You Like It” alongside some more obscure titles like “Cymbeline” and “Timon of Athens.”

Another theater in Washington DC in the before times put out a call for 10 minute plays that were related to the major themes in each of the plays that were headlining their season, like this:

Dreams & Discord
Seeking plays that address the juxtaposition between the lives we lead and the lives we wish for. We urge the exploration of the potential tension/energy between commitment and desire. We want scripts that explore how these forces interact between dynamic characters (couples of all permutations, families, strangers in a specific environment, etc).

Heroes & Home
Seeking plays that address our modern sense of belonging while contending with an aspect of bravery. Courage can take many different forms, and we are looking for scripts that reveal this contemporary perspective within a domestic environment. Updated twists on myths & legends might serve as one potential starting point, but we encourage you to branch out into other ideas.

Secrets & Sound
Seeking plays that explore a hidden truth or discovery. Your play must include a specific sound landscape or idea (such as cassette tapes, voicemail messages, vinyl, Siri, 8-track, etc), and be an active component of the play (as opposed to characters that happen to be musicians and play a drum on stage).

Covert Catalysts
We are looking for plays that examine an instant of revolution (on a macro or micro level) in an unexpected way. We encourage the playwrights to find a surprising method or action in which to invoke change. Expose and explore tension in a subterranean, surprising, humorous or clever way.

You can grab one of these, or better yet, what’s a play you really love?

What kind of play could you write that would serve as a companion piece to it?

Not a sequel or prequel, not using the same characters or story.  What story could you create that would play in the same territory, with the same themes or subject matter or type of characters?  Something original that comes from you, but inspired by a play that you admire.

Try that.

Or, you know, whatever you like.

Challenge #27 - She Blinded Me With Science

Challenge #27 - She Blinded Me With Science

Due: Sunday, November 28th, 8am

(whenever 8am arrives in your time zone; we’ll do the math here in the Central Time zone, no worries :)

Now, I don’t know about you, but science was never my strong subject in school. I got by OK, but it didn’t engage me in the same way that writing did.

However, I was always impressed, and continue to be, by folks who can write a compelling story that centers on science.

The playwright Lauren Gunderson does this a LOT, and I find her work fascinating (so do a lot of other people apparently because she was the most produced playwright in America in 2017 and 2019).

And there are a lot of calls out there for plays that focus on science and scientists, so I keep getting drawn back, both by my admiration for Gunderson, and by the fact that there are so many stories yet untold, about people whose work improved the world, that it seems silly not to explore (and perhaps educate myself in the process).

As an example, here’s some of the info that’s part of the annual call for proposals from the Ensemble Studio Theatre’s Science and Technology Project collaboration with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.  They’re looking for ideas for plays...

“delving into how we view and are affected by the scientific world. These plays examine the struggles and challenges scientists and engineers face from moral issues to the consequences of their discoveries.
 
The Project is designed to stimulate artists to create credible and compelling work exploring the worlds of science and technology and to challenge existing stereotypes of scientists and engineers in the popular imagination.

The EST/Sloan Project is open to a broad range of topics related to the issues, people, ideas, processes, leading-edge discoveries, inventions, and/or history of the "hard" sciences and technology.

HARD SCIENCES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
    •    Mathematics
    •    Physics (geological, nuclear, theoretical, etc.)
    •    Biology (evolution, zoology, animal behavior, ecology, molecular, genetics, etc.)
    •    Chemistry (industrial, biochemistry, etc.)
    •    Neuroscience
    •    Anthropology and Archaeology

TECHNOLOGY INCLUDES:

Another interesting science-related theater opportunity to check out is MACH 33: The Festival of New Science-Driven Plays at Cal Tech - https://tacit.caltech.edu/mach33

When I see something like this, I then think to myself, “well, what if I went looking for a queer scientist’s story, something that intersects with the other focus of my writing - that could be intriguing.”

So a jumping off point for LGBTQ+ scientists could be this one, which has a lot of other useful links:

And if you’re looking for women scientists, well, I landed here first (also with some handy additional resource links)

But type “(insert name of group here) scientists” in a search engine, and you’ll come up with all kinds of options to get you started.

Find your own way in but (just like with the history prompt a couple of days ago) it doesn’t need to be more than an idea that interests you.  Obviously this would take more than a day to research and start writing - though perhaps the idea of a scene or part of a scene, might come to you.  See what bubbles up.

And if not, you can always ignore this prompt and do whatever you want, just like every other day in November.

Just write.  Something.

Challenge #25 - Unstageable

Personally, I don’t think anything play is unstageable.

Theater has the benefit of suspension of disbelief and the power of the audience’s collective imagination behind it.  Anything is possible.

Producers or directors sometime think too literally, as if everything in a script needs to exist in an exact replica of reality on the stage, as it would in a film or TV show.

Another call for scripts along these lines from a couple of years ago amused me, so I offer it up to you, to see what it might inspire:

A theater out of St. Petersburg, Russia called Vibrating Body declared their intention to create an Independent International Award for Improper Dramaturgy, to support and identify underground dramatic writers.

One prize was to be awarded in the category of:

A Play That No One Will Ever Agree To Stage

Under Requirements it said:

Formal requirements are absent
There are no linguistic and geographical limits.

The theater Vibrating Body described itself as “an independent project in the field of theater, contemporary art and social service.
Our field of activity: mysticism, the joy of creativity, archetypes, dreams, paranormal, complex, subtle.
Our projects implemented in the field of modern theater, art performance and video art. In our works we rely on our own aesthetics and philosophy. We like to use mysticism, local archetypes, symbols and images. Each project is unique and has literary, theatrical, artistic and musical components.”

Just some weekly trivia on the daily output: we still stayed in the low 30s, with one exception last week.  One day we only had 29 entries turned in, but other than that, it was 30 submissions or more for the day, getting as high as 35 one day.  Keep it up, folks, you’re doing great.

Again, if you miss one day, don’t beat yourself up, just write again the next day.

As the Thanksgiving holiday once again conjures thoughts of real history vs. American mythology, those three prompts still pique my interest.

Challenge #23 - Hidden Histories

Due: Wednesday, November 24th, 8am

The Queerstory prompt from Left Coast Theatre the other day reminded me of other script calls that asked for writers to delve into figures from history that didn’t make a lot of our classes in school growing up.

There’s the ongoing call for scripts called “365 Women A Year” which is endeavoring to collect scripts on an epic list of women leaders throughout history from all over the world.  And they’re not accepting repeats until they cover all the women on the list.  You check out the list, put in a claim for a set of names (just in case someone else gets to one of your choices first), and then you get an assignment of who to write about, and it goes on from there. “This international playwriting project involves over 300 playwrights who have signed on to write one or more one-acts about extraordinary women in both past and present history. The project’s ambitious yet focused goal is to write women back into the social consciousness as well as empower and promote female playwrights around the world.”

The Arch & Bruce Brown Foundation used to support an annual playwriting competition (sadly discontinued in 2018) which asked for writers to submit scripts that focused on “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or genderqueer characters and/or themes and must be based on, or directly inspired by, a historical person, culture, work of art, or event. LGBTQ history must be central, not incidental, to the work.” 2017’s call had the intriguing additional guideline that “although submissions on any theme are welcome, this year we are particularly interested in works concerning pornography, sex workers, military service, aging, and education of LGBTQ youth.”  That is… a very eclectic list of interests.

All of which got me thinking, why not dig into history and see what stories we could find?  Because there’s lots of opportunity, both in theater companies calling for material on particular communities of people, and direct calls for works grounded in historic events and the people at their center.

I pulled some random websites up as potential resources:

African American

Asian American

Latino American

LGBTQIA+

Native American

Women

These are just samples.  If you type “(Insert Name of Group Here) History” into a search engine, you’ll find lots of other potential jumping off points.

Figure out a place your personal or family background might intersect with history, and find a person or event you’d be interested in researching further and writing about.

Or maybe just for a rough draft of the day, take real events and people as inspiration, and create something fanciful that recontextualizes it in a fictional framework you can take greater artistic license with.’

However, since truth is often stranger than fiction, you might find a story that needs no embellishment.

Poke around.  You may not have time to write even a script, but you might have time to write a scene, or a proposal of a paragraph or two about what you want to do.

Play around, or, as always, feel free to ignore this entirely.  It was just on my mind because I knew there are always outlets for it.

There’s a theater in San Francisco (still hanging in there, planning for a 2022 comeback) called Left Coast Theatre Company, and once or twice a year (pre-pandemic) they would put out a call for short scripts that could fall under the umbrella of a fairly broad theme.  For instance:

Twisted Fairy Tales

Shock & Awww

Sometimes they’d offer up a bit more of a hint of the sort of thing they were looking for, or additional elements to consider, such as:

Family Programming:
the characters and characteristics of queer family life — both the chosen family and the family we were given

Screaming Queens:
an LGBT perspective to classic horror subjects from haunted houses to the Zombie Apocalypse

San Francisco, Here I Come!:
Set in a single San Francisco apartment, SFHIC gave the audience six stories of LGBT experience from a noir-ish-1949 to a tech-crazed 2018 and explored the complicated relationship our community has with the City by the Bay.

The Morning After
plays that address big moments we experience in life: weddings, funerals, breakups, proposals, birthdays, coming out. But sometimes it’s the morning after that really changes our lives. We are looking for shorts that showcases the hilarity, the joy, the grief, the angst, and the uncertainty of the morning after the big event.

Between the Sheets
the trials and tribulations of queer sex

Queerstory
Forgotten Figures and Moments of Queer History - little-known, unknown or forgotten people or events in LGBTQ+ history


Now, Left Coast is an LGBTQ+ theater company, just like Threshold, so all these prompts and subsequent anthology shows that were birthed from them had a very queer bent.  But you can feel free to embrace that or go off in any other direction which tickles your fancy and speaks to your own style and aesthetic.

Take one of the above thematic prompts as your jumping off point and have fun with it.

Challenge #21 - Technology Gone Awry


Hi folks

We had a writer withdraw from the challenge the other day, which always surprises me.  Their email said, in part:

“I can't keep up trying to write a full length play with a daily prompt. Guess I am out!”

And I’m not going to argue with someone who doesn’t feel like they want to do the challenge anymore.  It’s up to them.

But as one of my teachers used to say, “I don’t think you understood the assignment.”

I’ve said this before in various ways over the last three weeks but maybe here’s another way of saying it:

Don’t make this harder on yourself than it is.
Don’t make this any more complicated than it is.

All you have to do is write, something, each day of the month, and then submit it before 8am the next day.

That’s it.

What you’re writing can be completely unconnected from what you wrote the day before.

What you’re writing can be completely divorced from the writing prompt for the day.

You don’t have to write a full script.  You don’t have to incorporate the challenge.

All you have to do is write.

(Doesn’t even need to be good writing.  That’s what rewrites are for.)

And if you just aren’t feeling it on a particularly day, and the inspiration well has run dry for a moment, or time just isn’t on your side and you can’t get something written - you have an escape hatch, a tiny little script at the end of each post and email I put out - or, as some have amusingly done, you can create a mini-play of your own to fulfill the same purpose.

And then just turn around and write something the next day.

Now, if the person who just pulled out really couldn’t find the time to do any of that in a day, that’s fine.  Life intervenes, I get it.

But we’re not trying to break anyone here.  The challenge isn’t a trick question.

We’re just trying to encourage you to prioritize your writing, just a little, every day, for a month.

That’s it.

There isn’t a way to fail at this.

Challenge #21 - Technology Gone Awry

Due: Monday, November 22nd, 8am

Here’s another offering from Aaron Sawyer at Red Theater from back in 2015 (I got a melancholy little ten minute play out of this one, see what it conjures up for you.)

“Write a play where a piece of technology drives the plot as a living being- but it dies UNEXPECTEDLY and in a big way.

MAKE IT PHYSICAL.

Questions:
How do we see this life?
How does the stage change when it dies?
How are we forever changed by its life? and the loss of its life?

Bonus if the audience can FEEL the death literally.

This is an exercise.
Don't worry about production costs.
Be amazing
Does water spray everywhere?
Is a smell emitted?
Does it vibrate the whole room?
Does it cause any humans to die?”

And, just to reassure you, no, we are not going to be sticklers about you following these directions down to the minutest detail - the important thing is that you write, and then that you share it with us, so we can keep track of who’s writing every day.

We will be VERY understanding about technical difficulties and how they can screw up making the deadline.  No need to fret about anything except the writing (and hopefully that’s not something causing you to fret too much either :)

Also, no, there is no penalty for finishing and submitting early - but it also isn’t a race, so give yourself all the time up til 8am on Monday to write if you need it.  When you’re done, you’re done.

A friendly reminder - you don’t have to write to the prompts if they don’t inspire you.  You can ignore them and just write whatever you want, just as long as you’re writing (that’s the main thing, not what you write)

Someone had a good question about the overall goal of the month, are we supposed to write a full-length play, or two one-act plays, etc.?  The short answer is no (unless you want to).  The longer answer is here if you’re curious.

For those concerned about format, we’re pretty liberal about that, too - just as long as it’s legible and in English.  More on that here.

Again, remember, it doesn’t need to be great, it doesn’t even need to be responding to this prompt (the prompt is just there so you’re not staring at a blank screen to start with no idea what to write about :)

Doesn't even need to be complete - you could have the beginning or the middle or the end of an idea, maybe two out of three but not all, that's still fine. This is all about getting things started, you can write more later. You have 9 more days to build on whatever you come up with today, if you want. Just get anything on the page, even if won't make sense to anyone else, as long as it make sense to you.

Challenge #20 - Your Favorite Story


Hi folks

Just because I may forget to thank people personally in the flurry of emails each day, I just wanted to say a quick blanket thank you to any of you who may have given yesterday to Threshold Theater as part of Give to the Max Day.  We really appreciate it.

In case you were wondering, "Hey, is he doing any writing like we are right now?" an update on this side of the blog for you.  In addition to conjuring up writing prompts this month for all of you, I’ve been working on a recording of a song I wrote for one of my plays.  The basic tracks have been laid down and now I’m polishing it with some effects, so we have it as a tool for actors in the upcoming production.  Basically, “this is what it sounds like, have fun with it.”  After that’s completed, my guitar teacher and I will work on a full arrangement version, so maybe we can use the song for post-show music.  Not playwriting, but playwriting-adjacent work at least. (Honestly, I envy you writing daily.  I miss being on the other side of these prompts.  I enjoyed the crush of random November writing in the past quite a lot.)

Challenge #20 - Your Favorite Story

Due: Sunday, November 21st, 8am

We all have them (if we’re lucky).  Stories we go back to again and again and never get tired of - a favorite novel, play, TV show, or movie.  A story that speaks to us, often in ways we can’t articulate.  We just keep reading or watching.  It’s an old friend.  It’s comfort food.  It inspires us to be better writers - so maybe one of these days we can write a story that could be somebody else’s favorite thing to revisit over and over again.

If you asked me about books, the first two things that leap to mind are any of the novels of Michael Cunningham (The Hours, Flesh and Blood, etc.) or the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series from the late great Douglas Adams.

If you asked me about movies, that’s Casablanca.

And as a playwright I have often been asked the question, what are your favorite plays?  And after way too many times where I just stared blankly back, like an interviewee being asked as question he should have been prepared for and was not, only to think much later of any number of scripts I should have mentioned, I came up a while ago with a basic list of go to titles:

Both parts of Angels in America by Tony Kushner (though I’m more partial to part 2)
As You Like It, and Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
Uncle Vanya, and The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov
Landscape of the Body by John Guare
Falsettos by William Finn

I realize as I type it now, it includes no plays by writers I’ve been reading and loving more recently, so it needs a refresh.  This will likely include titles from the following:

Annie Baker, Lynn Nottage, Sara Ruhl, Paula Vogel, and Naomi Wallace


So, what’s your favorite story?

Pull it out and break it down.

Study its structure and component parts.

Is there something you can write using the same tools and ingredients?

Play around and see what you find.

Challenge #19 - Random Phrase Generator, part 3


Hi folks

It'd sort of be theatrical malpractice of me not to mention this is Give to the Max Day here in Minnesota, where every worthy cause you can think of asks for your support (it's actually part of the much larger Give to the Max month of November - so they don't destroy their servers on one day as they've done in the past.)

Threshold Theater is asking for support, too, of course.

If you're finding this month-long series of writing prompts useful to your process, and you can afford to toss us a little more than the original $15 you put in the kitty to take part in this challenge, Threshold certainly wouldn't say no :)

Full disclosure: this is enlightened self-interest on my part.  Helping the theater raise money (which I'm doing through our grant writing work as well) means that we get just a bit closer to being able to stage a full production of my play "Spellbound" in early 2023.
